You can get more travel grants if you travel sustainably to your traineeship.
Short blended Erasmus traineeshop
Erasmus+ offers a possibility for you as a student to apply for a short blended (physical + virtual) traineeship scholarship in an approved country in Europe. The traineeship should be 3-4 weeks.
This form of traineeship is in a start-up phase at the university and available for a handful of programmes during a pilot project. The short traineeship must include a virtual (digital) component and the possibility to apply for the scholarship is therefore only available for you that studies at a program where the routines fulfil the requirements. You can ask your international contact person for more information.
The programmes that are included durint the start-up phase:
Physioterapy programme
Medical programme
Nursing programme
Education programmes (teachers etc.)
Dental Hygienist programme
Requirements for Erasmus+ scholarship
The traineeship should last 21-30 days. It is the days that you are in the host country that are eligible for the scholarship. Your course should include a 'virtual component'. This is a part that takes place digitally, remotely and is given by the receiving host.
Find your traineeship organisation
You or your department are responsible for finding your traineeship. You can do your traineeship at companies, organisations and research and educational centres abroad.
Requirements for applicants
As an applicant, you must:
- be a registered student on full-time studies at Umeå university when you apply for a scholarship
- pursue studies at Umeå University that you plan to lead to a recognised degree or other post-secondary qualification
- carry out the entire traineeship with the same traineeship host and live in the traineeship country for the duration of your traineeship
- not receive other scholarships from the EU or the Swedish Council for Higher Education at the same time.
Requirements your traineeship must meet
Your internship should:
- be full-time and cover 21 - 30 days
- take place in one of the Programme Countries of the Erasmus Programme
- be transferred (give credits) within your studies at Umeå University
- Get approved by your home institution be relevant to your studies
- Include a virtual component.
Countries included in the Erasmus+ programme
- The EU countries (except Sweden) as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Turkey, North Macedonia, and Serbia. You can also get a scholarship for doing your traineeship at Fribourg University in Switzerland. Since the United Kingdom left the EU on 1 February 2020, it is not an eligible country for traineeships within the Erasmus+ Programme at the moment. This may change for 2027.

Virtual Component
The virtual (digital) component must have a connection to the physical part and must be organised by the host organisation or similar (International Contat person can help). The digital component must have a clear learning objective and outcomes.
For example:
- Introductory start-up meeting (before)
- Reporting of results (after).
Under these conditions, you cannot receive a scholarship
Erasmus+ aims to promote international mobility and to help students gain international experience. Therefore, there are restrictions in terms of what you can receive a scholarship for.
Prerequisites where traineeship is not approved
You cannot receive grants:
- for a traineeship in Sweden;
- for a traineeship in the country where you live while studying at Umeå University;
- for distance traineeships; or
- if you commute from Sweden to your traineeship.
- for traineeships longer than 30 days.
- for internships that do not generate credits.
Not accepted traineeship hosts
- EU institutions and other bodies.
- Organisations working with EU programmes (such as international secretariats at universities). This is to avoid possible conflicts of interest and/or double financing.
- Universities that are mainly financed by EU funds.
Application and scholarship
Submit your application
When you have a traineeship host, you need to fill out this online application form (the form includes a field where you write your reasons for wanting to embark on a traineeship):

Within ten working days after your online application, you will receive an email invite to Umeå University's Canvas page for Erasmus Traineeship. On that page, you will find more information about how to proceed to complete your application.
Your application must be complete no later than 30 days before you start your traineeship. It is therefore important that you submit your online application well in advance, preferably no later than two months prior to the traineeship start date. Applications sent in after the traineeship has started will not be administred.
You can submit your application any time during the year, but please note that we do not process any applications between the following dates:
Mid June - Mid August
Mid December–Mid January
If you submit an application during one of the periods above, the processing will start once that period has ended. If you are starting a traineeship in August–September or January–February, it is therefore particularly important that you submit your application in good time.
Possibility for scholarship and travel grant
If you do an Erasmus+ traineeship in Europe, you can apply for a scholarship and travel grant for your traineeship. It is also possible to get extra scholarships if you have a disability, previous or ongoing protection need in Sweden (from autumn 2025) and/or have children.
Within the Erasmus programme, you have the opportunity to go abroad to study or traineeship for a total of 12 months per level of education (bachelor's, master's and doctoral level). It's an opportunity to gain new experiences, meet new people, and take a step into your future career.

Order of priority
If there are more applicants than funds, a selection will be made based on a number of criteria contained in the document describing the order of priority.
You are insured by Student OUT
As an Erasmus trainee, you are insured through the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency's (Kammarkollegiets) insurance Student OUT.
If your traineeship is to be transferred as credits for studies at your study programme, you will receive the insurance certificate from your study counsellor or the international coordinator at you department. If your traineeship is not accepted to be transferred as credits, you can get your insurance certificate from the International Office by contacting erasmusstipendium@umu.se.
It is your responsibility to review your insurance coverage and assess your insurance needs. You may need to take out your own insurance.
