The department includes research and education in a number of clinical specialties, the field of general medicine as well as public health sciences in the form of the Division of Sustainable Health. The department covers a very wide range of diseases, including major diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, asthma/COPD and psoriasis, as well as less common, disabling diseases such as Skellefteå disease and congenital heart defects.
